What's on the NCJOSI-2?

The National Criminal Justice Officer Selection Inventory measures ten cognitive abilities in Section I, followed by a separate 120-item behavioral-orientation section. Our study materials and simulations cover the ten cognitive abilities, plus behavioral practice inventories for format familiarization.

Verbal Comprehension (Reading Comprehension)

Understanding written passages and drawing conclusions from text.

Verbal Expression (Writing Ability)

Identifying correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.

Deductive Reasoning

Applying stated rules, policies, or procedures to reach correct conclusions.

Inductive Reasoning

Identifying patterns, trends, or commonalities from examples.

Spatial Orientation

Understanding directions and navigating routes using maps or descriptions.

Selective Attention

Quickly identifying relevant details among distracting information.

Flexibility of Closure

Recognizing a known pattern or object when partially hidden or obscured.

Information Gathering (Information Ordering)

Determining the correct sequence or priority of actions and information.

Problem Sensitivity

Recognizing when something is wrong or likely to go wrong.

Visualization

Recognizing how a person or object will look after changes — hair, expression, facial hair, or rotation.

How to find out which exam your department uses

Not every agency uses the NCJOSI-2. Before you start preparing, confirm which exam you'll be taking:

  1. Check the job posting. Most postings name the written exam or the testing vendor (often I/O Solutions for NCJOSI-2).
  2. Call the civil service commission or HR office for the city or county.
  3. Check the department's website under "Careers" or "Join" pages.
  4. Ask your recruiter or union rep. They'll know which exam is administered.

Common alternatives include the NPOST, PELLETB, and agency-specific civil service exams. More exam types coming soon — including the NFSI (National Firefighter Selection Inventory). That's the Hose in Badge & Hose.

Frequently asked questions

What is the NCJOSI-2?

The National Criminal Justice Officer Selection Inventory, 2nd Edition (NCJOSI-2) is a written cognitive ability test used by law enforcement agencies across the United States to screen entry-level police officer candidates. It's published by I/O Solutions and measures ten cognitive constructs: verbal comprehension (reading), verbal expression (writing), deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, information gathering, problem sensitivity, selective attention, spatial orientation, flexibility of closure, and visualization. Section II is a separate 120-item behavioral-orientation section; the full exam allows 2½ hours.

What about the behavioral section?

Section II presents 120 statements you rate on an agree–disagree scale. It measures work-related attitudes, takes most candidates 30–40 minutes, and isn't something you can cram for — the only strategy that works is honest, consistent answering. Our prep covers the cognitive section, where practice moves your score, plus behavioral practice inventories for format familiarization and self-insight. Read our free guide to the behavioral section.

How is this different from the official IOS study materials?

The official study guide is a PDF with one fixed practice test. Badge & Hose gives you a large question bank, repeatable timed simulations scored by construct, instant explanations, and phone-friendly study mode — built to complement the official guide, not replace it.

What's the difference between study mode and simulation mode?

Study mode lets you practice one question at a time with immediate feedback, detailed explanations, and the ability to focus on specific constructs. There's no timer and no pressure. Simulation mode replicates the actual test with enforced time limits, sequential delivery, and no going back. You get a full score report with construct breakdown after submitting.

Can I use this on my phone?

Yes. Study mode is fully mobile-responsive and designed for phone use. Simulation mode works best on a laptop or tablet since it mimics the desktop testing environment you'll encounter on exam day.

What happens when my access expires?

Your progress data and simulation results are preserved. You can purchase again at any time to pick up where you left off. Free tier access never expires.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you haven't accessed any paid content and it's been fewer than 7 days since purchase, you can request a full refund from your dashboard. Once you start studying with paid content, the purchase is final.

Is my payment secure?

All payments are processed by Stripe, a PCI Level 1 certified payment processor. We never see or store your credit card number.

Does this guarantee I'll pass?

No test prep product can guarantee a passing score — be skeptical of any that claim to. What we offer is thorough preparation: realistic practice content, detailed performance feedback, and a systematic way to identify and improve your weak areas.
